Dermatologists Found Guilty of Trying to Destroy The Sun

Okay, maybe that headline is a little over the top but I am convinced that dermatologists so want to feel more significant that they are mounting a war against sunlight.  It has been working, too, as more and more people have been found to have lower and lower levels of Vitamin D.  Heck, there is hardly a person that I ever check here in Maine who has a normal level.  With this low Vitamin D comes rickets, depression, muscle pain, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone, osteoporosis and on and on.  This has made patients more and more confused.  Is the sun bad or not?  Moderate amounts are fine and needed.  Well, that hasn't sat well with the dermatologists.  Remember, to them the sun is evil and they are saving us from it.  In fact, the Archives of Dermatology just came out with a study showing that the higher a person's vitamin D levels, the higher the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  Really?  I am not so sure.  The study shows no actual causation and just makes note of some observed variables.  Yes, overdoing the sun can give you high Vit D levels and those "overdoers" are at risk because, well, they are "overdoers".  But let's not confuse patients anymore.  These dermatologists just need to stop with the big bad sun thing.  It is getting old.   You do an important job.  You just don't save lives (maybe a very, very rare case).  But you do make a ridiculous amount of money with nary a day of call in your whole lives. Be happy and let it go.
